PROJECT PROFILE: A new beginning
I first met A to discuss this custom installation of New Yorker covers. She had fallen in love and began collecting the iconic magazine some 20 years before. To her, not only did each cover represent the world as it was at a certain moment in time, but also served as a marker to events in her life. A bookmark of memories.
As we set out to discuss the process of transforming memories into art and her vision she ended up taking me on a walk down memory lane. From the AIDS epidemic in New York in the 90's to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia, each had a story, a time and a place. She recalled homes she had lived in, relationships that had come and some now gone. In fact these magazines were a representation, to her, of a fresh start, and this installation was a step in a different direction.
The New Yorker cover installation
Ann had recently sold her heritage home over 100 years old and full of charm. She decided that as an empty nester it was now time to down size and move to something smaller. So it came to be that we were charged with the task of deciding what would stay and what would go. The house was briming with antiques all with a story and a sentiment. After some discussion we set out to shop our way thru the old house to breathe new life into old pieces. I called it shopping at Ann's house.
